Appraisal services

When the only argument left is the amount.

Most property policies include an appraisal clause for disputes over the dollar value of a covered loss. It's a structured way to settle the number without going to court, and we can serve as your appraiser.

Overview

How the appraisal clause works

Either side can request appraisal in writing when the disagreement is about the amount of the loss. Each side names its own appraiser, and the two appraisers choose a neutral umpire.

The appraisers try to agree on the value. Anything they can't agree on goes to the umpire. A written award signed by two of the three sets the amount of the loss. Appraisal settles value only; questions about whether something is covered stay with the carrier and, if needed, the courts.

Is appraisal the right fit?

Good fit: coverage accepted, amount disputed

The carrier agrees the damage is covered but the payment is far below repair cost.

Good fit: the gap justifies the cost

Appraisal has costs for both sides, so the difference should be large enough to matter.

Poor fit: the claim was denied

A full coverage denial is not a value dispute, and appraisal generally won't resolve it.

Poor fit: damage isn't documented

Without solid evidence of the damage, there's little to value. Start with an inspection.

It depends on the size of the loss and how quickly the appraisers agree. Many residential appraisals resolve within a few months.
Is the appraisal award binding?
